Biography
Po-Yu Liu, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at the School of Medicine, College of Medicine, National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU), Taiwan. His research integrates clinical microbiome studies, ecological microbiology, and computational biology, emphasizing multi-omics approaches to understand how microbial communities influence health, disease, and environmental adaptation. He collaborates with multiple medical centers on translational microbiome projects related to gynecology, nephrology, hepatology, and head-and-neck oncology, with particular focus on gut microbiota in chronic kidney disease and metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).
Po-Yu received dual bachelor's degrees in Biology and Public Health from Kaohsiung Medical University, an MSc in Zoology/Life Science, and a PhD in Genome and Systems Biology from National Taiwan University (PhD: NTU and Academia Sinica). His doctoral research investigated host–microbiota interactions using integrated multi-omics analyses, including next-generation sequencing and metabolomics, to elucidate microbial ecology and metabolic crosstalk in mammalian systems.
After completing his PhD in 2019, he joined the National Taiwan University College of Medicine as a bioinformatician, participating in a wide range of human disease-associated microbiota studies. He later conducted academic visits at the Royal Veterinary College and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the United Kingdom, where he led multi-omics integration projects linking microbiome, metabolome, and host data to identify potential biomarkers of anti-parasite vaccine therapeutic targets.
Currently, his laboratory at NSYSU is developing a novel invertebrate model to explore the colonization dynamics of gut microbiota through Nanopore sequencing and other omics technologies. Guided by the “One Health” framework, Po-Yu’s research aims to bridge human, animal, and environmental microbiomes through cross-disciplinary, multi-omics integration to advance precision medicine and ecological understanding.
